Should I use a template for my new website?

My first reaction to this question is...run. Run away as fast and as far as you can! When I think of a website template, I immediately think of the Grinch's theme song...

You're a monster, Mr. Template.
Your heart's an empty hole.
Your brain is full of spiders,
You've got garlic in your soul.
Mr. Template.

I wouldn't touch you, with a
thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

All kidding aside, a template has many limitations. Developing a website is like building a house. If the foundation is not sound and strong, the rest of the house will not be supported.

A custom design will give you and your end users a more personable experience. It will make you and your business stand out in a sea of templates. A clean and simple design will let the content shine. The last thing you want is for a user to notice the bad design elements. This will turn them away in the long run. Great design is like a very comfortable pair of jeans. You hardly notice you are wearing them...

So, can you tell how I feel about templates?
